OK, the D3 is here, so what is next the D3X or D4 at 18+ MP?  I am going to pass on the D3, since my D2X does everything I need it to do, and wait for the 18+ MP D3X/D4 camera.  Speculation please?

Well... this news may suggest that if you're a MP chaser, you better switch over to the darker side.   Evil

Sorry, I am committed to Nikon.  I would just like an 18+ MP Nikon.

Then why would you "need" a D3X?  Huh

Ah........there is a difference b/w *want* and *need*!!! ;-)

My D2Xs has done everything I really *need* it to do as well, but the lure of a camera that will do what the D2Xs will do, *and* shoot cleanly enough to create useable images at iso 3200 *and* that has 18-22 mpix.......Yeah.....I don't need that, but I'd like to have it!!

My D3x wish list is simple:

1. 18-22 mpix (don't know why I want that really as 12 seems to create beautiful images at any size I ever print up to)
2. Larger and fewer focus areas with a focusing screen like the D2Xs

See, I'm a simple man with simple wants......and......*needs*! ;-)

Oh what a world we/I live in. My D3 has been out of the box for 10 days, I haven't really learned to use it properly yet and already I am dreaming of the next, "new and improved" version.

And I say my *wife* is hard to please!!!!

May be a long wait.  Took em four years too long to get to the D3.  Probably take em at least 18 months to improve on it. Shocked

I wonder what is going to be dropped on us by Nikon for the Olympics in Beijing?

It's no big secret that a high-MP camera now is in the works at Nikon. We likely see it materialised in about 6 months time. The exact specifications remain to be seen but I have my hunches.

With the sensor improvements that have recently come about, I don't think it will take them long to come up with another body that "stands on the shoulders" of the D3* technology.

Bjørn,

In your opinion, does Nikon need to keep increasing the MP count; or is it just to "keep up" with the other guys?

The FX format needs a high-resolving camera besides the D3. No doubt about that. Nikon does not "have to" keep up with the competition, but they can see this basic fact as clearly as anyone else.

I'm not certain the technology is matured enough to give us 30+ MPix cameras yet in the FX format. Ideally one would hope for approx. 40% higher resolution than the D3 (or twice the pixel count).

Just wondered would increasing the pixel count by 50 % have a similar detrimental effect on image noise or with the recent advancements made by Nikon would that not necessarily be a problem. presumably like most things in life you don`t get something for nothing !

The updated DSLR's have been ready for some time and are just going through the normal stringent testing prior to going out to Nikon pros for final pre-release workouts. So we'll have the next one more likely being used at the Olympics.

The D4 will be a better camera than the present D3, and the D5 will probably swing me completely over to DSLR bodies...but I'm quite happy with the cameras already available by Nikon, Canon and Pentax at the present moment to not be too fussed if Nikon take a bit longer than Canon in ironing out bumps in the race for advancement. My wish list includes a wallet-friendly FX option for those who don't need machinegun speed bursts and all that pro stuff. Canon has had 5D for ages, and since Nikon now also has a "full frame" sensor, why not release a stripped down version for us lowly mortals...

Because they're selling every sensor they make on a high-margin product.  Why give all those high-dollar purchasers a cheaper, less profitable alternative at this stage in the game?  That'd be a particularly poor business decision on Nikon's part.  Amateurs are buying D300's in droves- no point in splitting that market at the point where you're selling every body you manufacture on both sides of the DX/FX equation.  Personally, I think Nikon has at least a year's worth of D3 sales before things start to slow, and if this year's high-rez body debuts well, then I think they'll be set for a while at the high end.

They've stated that they don't intend to compete head-to-head with Canon, and DX is darned good for many people, so I don't see why they'd feel a "need" to do a stripped down FX body, as the sensor is the lowest-margin, highest-cost single component.

Nikon's good at surprises, but I wouldn't hold my breath on this one- if you want a 5D-like body, why not just get a 5D?

Hehe, or as I saw on another forum: "That's like asking a Mercedes driver why not just get a Ford" Grin
But I think it's only a matter of time that an FX-sensor will show up in a smaller package.
Just don't ask me, how much time...

All I would like is a D3 with the AF of a Mark III and a new 28mm f1.4 prime with AF-S.

If you really need more megapixels get a Canon 1Ds Mark III and be done with it. Little point in sitting on your hands waiting for the next Nikon. Or get a used 1Ds Mark II which will represent less of a loss should you sell it later when the next generation of D3 is released.
