Today I went to lunch with my eldest daughter to a local branch of a chain of Italian restaurants called Bella Italia, there was this chap presumedly a pro taking some product shots with a D800.

I asked if he minded me taking his photo when he was taking a photo, he said he didn't mind, so I used my iPhone 4s to take this. We had a quick chat where I told him about Nikongear.com and then left him to carry on with his work.

All available light? I haven't shot a lot of food before, but this setup looks a bit too simplistic. Were there any reflectors in use?

Well I assume the gizmo on top of the wheelhouse viewfinder is a remote. I can't tell if there were any lights of course, but I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Dallas, as Bart mentioned, the device sitting in the hot shoe looks like a wireless flash trigger. So I assume the flashes are probably just out of sight in Mike's photo.

You can tell because he's using a (cheap ... shhh!) tripod, and has the Nikon branded strap on the camera.



None-the-less, his pictures will come out to the restauranteur's liking and he'll get paid once more. It's all good.

I generally shoot product and most of the time there is a front light and a top light, or reflectors. This angle looks a bit weird for food, considering its a 60mm micro Nikkor on the camera. Food is usually shot from lower angles and much closer.

Is it a food shot, or a mood shot for the menu backdrop?

If we don't know what he's trying to achieve, it seems a bit presumptuous to comment on his method. I'm with Bart on this one.

Yes he did use lighting a two light set up, and do you know I cannot remember if one was a flash!!!

He spent all the time we were there taking shots of various dishes and then started shooting various drinks on a white backdrop taped to one of the tables.

The white backside you can see is one of the restaurant staff helping him.

He did shoot from various angles including closer and lower!
