I really can't take credit for this, its straight out of camera, light just happened to be coming in from oblique angles, creating a pleasant effect.

In my younger days I worked as a stagehand for a local promoter and during of these jobs I got the chance to spend a couple of hours with Chick Corea. When I expressed my admiration for his piano play he told me that playing piano is very easy ... "just press the right key at the right moment."

Well, its going to be an interesting couple of weeks, if I can somehow not take assignments to the more dangerous parts of the world. Wak was breathtaking today as the breeding colors revealed themselves for the first time this season. Luckily the little NEX was up to the task, mated with the superlative 400 3.5 Ai-s. A master blaster combo to be sure.

There were two gbh but now its down to one in the "verandah" nest. I call it the verandah because it is so perfectly suited to photos. Lets hope this little guy makes it, awful cute.

Edit, yes, to be clear, this little guy is the progeny of the two adults in the OP.

So, finally got around to the wak again after far too long. The exotics were still a little far out, but I don't know if there will be enough time this year for me to really track them down.

All the normal characters are out in abundance though...

Beautiful images indeed.

Have you ever considered taking your gear out on the water, this guy is either brave or a very
competent paddler, wouldn't want to capsize with that rig.
What a stunning place for bird photography.

@wildoat, that looks like fun, good shots they got too. I think you need a kayak down here in florida for the best birding opportunities so it would be tough to rig like those boys have their setup. Closed vs open bottom design.

The 1000 islands area of FL are a dream like that, but you have to be seriously outfitted, because it requires GPS and the currents are nuts.

Wak is short for wakodahatchee wetlands. Some people here are familiar with them. I apologize for being so vague.

They are located in Boynton Beach Florida.

I recognize a number of my Wak friends in these splendid shots!

Sorry to hear that Verandah Chick #2 also failed to make it -- his sibling apparently died during the night before we got there and we sadly witnessed the parents removing its corpse from the nest.

Work has actually made it impossible for me to get out there, even though it's only 10 minutes away. Tomorrow I have the whole day off however, and plan to do a full recce in the morning. I will post here if there is anything worthwhile.

BTW, can any of you recommend and apparatus to move the tripod foot forward closer to the front element, or a plate that has threads for such a thing? My 400 is grossly front heavy on a tripod because I use mirrorless NEX, and the lens is obviously designed to be counterweighed by a heavy SLR. I need a machined plate that screws into the tripod foot and a thread on the same plate forward of the foot screw by about 4 inches.
