Spent two nights at Kubu island on the Makgadigadi pans in Botswana, and tried my hand at some night photography using the D300 and a Sigma 10-20 lens.

The star trials was a two hour exposure at ISO 200, the Milky way was a 30s exposure at ISO 3200.Circles.jpg _DS36777.jpg

And here is a daylight image to show what it looks like by day.

Exciting results. The second shot is completely surreal — a Martian landscape.

The photos are beautiful! Perfect examples of night photography. How did you illuminate the scene in the second picture?

Nice, particularly the light on number 3

Nice shots.
I'm curios about the first one: was the camera set to "LongExposureNoiseReduction" ON?
If so, how long did it take the dark frame, another 2h or less?

Also, is that glare light pollution?

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Marco, the camera was set with Long Exposure NR ON, I left the camera on for the rest of the night after the shot and downloaded the image the next morning assuming it would take about two hours to take the reference "black" picture.

The light could be reflection of the white slat pans from starlight etc?, no big cities nearby, except for a few campers, but they were mostly situated to the back of us.

We used a incandescent torch to paint the trees and foreground with light.

I really like your star trails. I have tried to do them but, so far, nothing has happened.
