A little known lens with an excellent image quality, it is almost as big as the 300/2.8 and even fatter, but a tad shorter. With the impressive hood on many mistake it for a fast 300. In the typical fashion of fast telephoto lenses, it performed best set to the f/2-f/5.6 range.

First version used front-mounted filters, the final AIs had a rear slot for gel filter and no threads to the front.
