Truly superb series on one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century - grab a carafe of merlot or pinot noir (or a liter or two of Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier), or some espresso, it's a 9-part series... all so worthwhile.

Richard Avedon: Darkness and Light

He shot my ex-(former) mother-in-law, early supermodel Dorian Leigh, in the late-40s and early-50s... and his work covers an extraordinary depth and breadth of mid-to-late 20th century portraiture as well as high fashion photography.

Hundreds of stunning shots (and great vid interviews) - you won't be disappointed...

I have just watched the whole film (all nine parts of it).

The film is truly awesome: Richard Avedon's brilliant and sensitive photography, and the man himself, are inspiring, fascinating, moving and thought-provoking. Every aspiring photographer simply HAS to watch this film.

Avedon's snake photograph truly is "a magical thing" — everything about it — and, for me, it's one of the most memorable photographs of all time.

You're most welcome, Lars - so glad you enjoyed the first one so much (and I am running them more than once, as I listen - and peek while I'm editing)... I share your regard (and Ann's) for Avedon's work - it's an astonishing body of accomplishment over a lifetime. This summer, I can take time to truly watch the whole 9-part series with no distractions. There are a few other photographers and a lot of visual artists covered in other segments from PBS' The American Masters series as well - I'll post more as I get to them.

Must say, my wife and I love your city (and country). We visited Guadalajara for 10-days at Christmas about five years ago, and totally fell in love with the city, the people and many of the surrounding communities (several museums... dozens of beautiful churches and cathedrals - both in Guadalajara and the small, surrounding towns... Lake Chapala... the Ruby mines - with a group of a miners in a pickup truck... some géisers... I've been telling people ever since that Guadalajara is the must-visit city in México. We talked several times about moving there.
