has anyone noticed the technical details on the awarded shot

I have actually just come from viewing the World Press Photo exhibition in Cape Town this morning. but it was the 2011 I got to see.
I thought the images were superb and I wish I was the one taking them.

There's a discussion going on in Norway whether the photos from Utøya, where a mass murderer killed 69 people, should be awarded a prize, or even published. The negative reactions relates to that some of the dead people can be identified, but also that the photos haven't been published before. So far all newspapers have denied publishing them, even the paper that the photographer works for. Personally I think it's totally wrong that photos that have not been published, should be awarded a prize for "best press photo".

Obviously I do not know the facts - so my comment is in general:

If a photo has not been published in the media - it is not a press photo in my eyes.

just my thought.

but - the photo in question - how does it get nominated? surely it must have been seen somewhere by someone?

I agree. Imagine a journalist being awarded the Pulitzer prize for a story that was never published!

I would love to hear the true facts and outcome of that story about the mass murderer

The facts are that he killed (shot) 69 young people, teenagers mostly, on Utøya, disguised as a police officer. He also blew up a 950 kilo bomb close to the government headquarters, the explosion killed several people there as well.
The trial against him will be in April. Now psychiatric experts are discussing whether he was/is sane or not. If the conclusion is that he is not sane, he will be locked up in a high-security psychiatric ward. He will obviously never be set free whether he is sentenced to jail or psychiatric treatment.

I have now been informed that the photos had actually been published, in a Danish paper known to be unscrupulous.
But I still don't think they are good photos, they are speculative and have not much to do with what I regard as good press photos.

I do recall when the mass murder was committed - it was all over our news too - I did mean the true story about the publication - when you subsequently answered thank you.
