Nikon V1 + FT-1 (converter) + TC 2.0x + 400mm f/2.8

Available light shot at 100% crop at 2,160mm equivalent fov. Not-too-bloody-shabby.

More than just for shits-and-giggles: it is only somewhat less impressive than it might be on a Sachtler with some sand bags...

OK, so it is an 800 mm f/5.6 lens on a less than adequate tripod. You would expect good detail no matter what camera is hooked up to the optics. The slight blur and the presence of CA detract from the final quality. I'm not terrible impressed.

We greatly look forward to the august 1200mm/V1 on a proper tripod, Maestro R.

Interesting, at least as an object lesson in what is and isn't possible. I'd be curious to see what kind of results can be produced outside of a shopping mall, with wind, atmospheric disturbance and harsher highlights thrown into the mix.

It does make me a little more likely to consider a V1 as a pocket cam. With my 300 2.8 and TC20EIII I could plausibly put a lot of pixels on very distant birds for the purposes of making record shots, though I wouldn't expect anything more than that from it, and certainly wouldn't pick up a V1 specifically to do wild telephoto stunts.

What shot would be a 50mm equivalent (so we have a sense of distance to subject)?

By the way, how was the ISO settig? If ISO was high, did you switch the Hi-ISO NR on?

Akira: not my shots, so I can't answer - but Peter at NR would probably be happy to. (follow the Contact linky at the linked-post there).


It's less than perfect - and obviously won't measure against a solidly mounted D3X (or D7000 - or anything higher, most likely), but for an EVIL semi-prosumer pocket rocket saddled with a ton of adapted glass - it peeped a helluva lot better than I would have expected it to.

the technical quality of the image is not what is impressive here, what is impressive is being able to read ±10 point type and see the individual strands knit into shoelaces from perhaps 25 meters away.

i suspect it would be exceedingly difficult to achieve these kind of results outside except in the most perfect of atmospheric conditions!
