One morning I could not sleep; found a beautiful sunrise was coming and was compelled to go up the little hill at the back of the rorbu to take pictures.

Sometimes with panos we tend to get carried away and make them too wide, but this one is just the right length to please my eye.

@ Dallas: you are right. I have another pano that although well executed is in my opinion not on par with this, exactly for the reason you mentioned. I will post it later tonight.

Just for curiosity, I was originally shooting the frames of this pano independently, and each of them stands on its feet. It was only after the fact that I thought that a pano could be made out of them; fortunately I had kept the same exposure throughout the process and the camera was levelled.

That sunrise was a special moment.
From there on the day was downhill. The good light was all concentrated in that 1 hour and the following hours were gray and yucky.

Very nice indeed! Is it difficult to stitch panoramas? Do I need Photoshop to do it or is there some cheaper / free software for it?

If you are using Windows. do a search for ICE by Microsoft - It's free & works very well.
There are others but they cost $$

If you are using a Mac - I can't help you

I use Hugin, which is free and is released for all platforms.
It does everything, including blending bracketed panoramas.

The only thing is I don't think it reads RAW files. You have to give it tiffs or jpegs.

If you do some attention while taking the photos, stitching them is very easy.
Basic panoramas can even be done handheld.

Only a few minutes after the first one, but that was enough for the rainbow to disappear.
Much wider and therefore possibly not Dallas' taste
