Kudu: a very elegant antelope …

Tasty, but not quite as nice as some of the smaller antelope in my opinion.

I like that the image shows the environment. It's a very pleasing difference from the close-ups.

I cannot now look at a photo of a kudu without thinking of the amazing kudu steak we had the first night in Sabi Sabi.  Even better than the impala steak later in the week.

I find  Antelopes to be somewhat difficult to photograph because being Prey rather than Predators, they are extremely wary, difficult to get close to and like to hide in thorny thickets.

I find  Antelopes to be somewhat difficult to photograph because being Prey rather than Predators, they are extremely wary, difficult to get close to and like to hide in thorny thickets.

And when they do make a break out of the bushes, they move fast?  Did you manage to get any springbok? I really liked tehm both on the hoof and the plate.  If you're into horns how about some oryx?

Most shots like these show passive herbivores grazing. Photo #1 quite to contrary shows a lot of emotion and attitude. He is one bad ass herbivore. A truly remarkable shot.

Unfortunately we saw neither Springbok nor Oryx. Sabi Sabi is in the north-east of the country (on the western edge of Kruger Park) and both Springbok and Oryx are mostly found in the north-west section of the country.

I did get to eat some Springbok at a wonderful restaurant, the justly renowned La Colombe, on the Constantia Uitzig estate near Cape Town. It was simply delicious and the dish looked so pretty that I photographed that too!
