This is the original version.  I was always quite pleased with it as a standard zoom for film.  It had a very useful wide angle and would focus down to the palm of my hand, which was good close focus.  The only problem I had was the rather wide diameter sunshade getting in the road of flash (SB26 on a F90x).

I have this lens as well. It's on my D700 most of the time. I must of bought a good copy(serial number near end of run) because I find it to be sharp and very contrasty) I don't think I will be buy the F4 version anytime soon.
You only have 1* to risk. So live to the fullest :)
