When I tested some lenses against a proper testing chart, my Series E 70-210 f4 was nearly as good at all apertures and focal lengths as my 80-200 f2.8 AF -D (push-pull).  I either have an excellent Series E lens or my 80-200 is defective, or maybe people who write about these lenses and dis them have never used one.

Recently purchased a very good example of this lens for £160. So far, results have been excellent (in my non-expert opinion). I'll post some example shots up but it's a great lens that really Nikon should still be producing in one form or another!
